Sox Lose, But it Wasn’t a Total Loss

GLENDALE, AZ — Not much to report today on the fortunes of the Pale Hose here at Camelback Ranch. The last two days at the ballpark have been rather ho-hum. After spending my first day enjoying two Sox victories on Thursday,
I had to endure the loss to the Cubs on Friday and a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Rangers yesterday.
The major UP was Adam Dunn‘s day at the plate. He doubled and tripled, accounting for 40 percent of the Sox hits, and scored the club’s only run when he came home on an Alex Rios groundout in the seventh. And the relievers were stellar. Tony Pena, Josh Kinney, Jeff Gray, Gregory Infante and Freddy Dolsi each pitched a scoreless inning.
The DOWNS were the overall Sox play and the four runs and eight hits in four innings surrendered by starter Edwin Jackson.
Despite what occurred on the field, the day ended in grand fashion. Along with my good friends Paul Jensen, who now runs the PR at Camelback Ranch, and iconic Sox trainer Herm Schneider, I attended the annual Sox sponsor/investor weekend picnic–held in the batting cage area. How bad could it be when you’re surrounded by men and women who work for the Sox, their children, serious Sox fans and good food? And it was a treat to visit with Sox Executive Vice President Howard Pizer and the Chairman, Jerry Reinsdorf.
By the way, the photo above shows Jensen giving me instructions last spring as I was about to throw out the ceremonial first pitch in a game against the Royals.
Now can you see why I love spring training?
